What is Ocular Drug Delivery Systems about?
Ocular drug delivery system (ODDS) is a dosage form, vehicle, or system intended for instilling, administering, or delivering drug/ medicine to eye against any ailment or disorder involving or affecting vision. It ranges from simple sterile eye drop for the ocular surface to complex implants for intraocular tissue. The most common diseases or disorders that require ODDS are refractive errors, glaucoma, cataract, infection of the ocular surface, inflammation, dry eye syndrome, diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), etc. [1]. The treatments for these are either curative or one providing symptomatic relief spanning from a short period of 2-3 days to months and belong to varied categories like anticholinergic, antimicrobials, antiinflammatory, antioxidants, antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), laser, and anticancer. These treatments can be provided by oral and systemic routes but the most established and convenient way is a local route where affected tissues are directly exposed to medicine/drug/ treatment.
