## Introduction Long-acting injectable or implantable drug delivery systems (LAII-DDS) play an important role in the therapeutic treatment of diseases. They should provide a reliable and, in most cases, constant release of the drug. The most widely used dosage forms are preformed implants, microparticles, in situ forming implants, and injectable gels. In addition, electrospinning emerges as a versatile technique for the manufacturing of electrospun nonwovens or also 3D implants . The majority of the clinical used systems are based on the biodegradable polymers polylactide (PLA) or poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). However, there is an increasing interest to extend the selection opportunity to alternative degradable materials, including polymeric hydrogels, lipids, phospholipids, or inorganic materials. LAII-DDS applications include the delivery of drugs that act systemically or far from the location of their release (e.g., peptides to treat breast cancer and prostate cancer and release of antischizophrenic compounds).
