What is Evolution of Controlled Drug Delivery Systems about?
The use of drugs in crude form derived from natural sources such as plants, animals, and minerals existed in the early human history. The earliest reports of medicinal preparations date back to 1550 b.c. as seen in Ebers Papyrus with more than 800 formulas and 700 drugs [1,2]. "De materia medica" written by Dioscorides, a Greek physician and botanist of a.d. 50-70, was the basis for the development of pharmaceutical botany or pharmacognosy. Claudius , a Greek pharmacist-physician was the author of 500 treatise in medicine, and he formulated many preparations of natural origin by mixing or melting of ingredients. The field of pharmaceutical preparations was once known as Galenic Pharmacy. In Asia, the use of animal fats in medicinal preparations to prolong the action was reported in 168 b.c. in Chinese "Recipes for Fifty-Two Ailment." Indian Charaka Samhita (Ayurveda), a compendium containing detailed description of various drugs, formulations, and their pharmacological actions was dated between 200 b.c. and a.d. 200. Chinese Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu) was a collection of 1892 herbal medicines and preparations by Li Shizhen in 1593. A review of history of medicine
