The use of drugs in crude form derived from natural sources such as plants, animals, and minerals existed in the early human history. In Asia, the use of animal fats in medicinal preparations to prolong the action was reported in 168 b.c. in Chinese "Recipes for Fifty-Two Ailment." Indian Charaka Samhita (Ayurveda), a compendium containing detailed description of various drugs, formulations, and their pharmacological actions was dated between 200 b.c. and a.d. 200.
