What is Total Oxidative Stress and Disease about?

Chronically elevated oxidative stress causes and/or exacerbates disease in all body systems. These include, metabolic, respiratory, neurological, endocrine, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, urinary tract, kidney, liver, skin, immunological and autoimmunological, eye, periodontal, pathogenic and carcinogenic diseases. Oxidative stress, the driving force for these, can be seen from the presence of common biomarkers, the most widely examined of these being serum malondialdehyde. It is total oxidative stress, no matter what the sources, that determines the likelihood of disease onset. Studies that demonstrate this relationship include total oxidative stress resulting from different chemical, chemical-radiation and chemical-disease combinations. Disease prevention strategies based on oxidative stress reduction are presented.
