What is Diagnosing Heart Failure about?
It is often said that heart failure is not a diagnosis per se but a clinical syndrome consisting of a constellation of symptoms and signs, which are ultimately due to cardiac dysfunction. Nevertheless, it is important to diagnose accurately the presence of heart failure in order to facilitate the general and specific treatments that can modify its traditionally poor outlook. The diagnosis of heart failure involves three distinct yet related phases. First, there is the confirmation that the patient has heart failure; second, the nature of the underlying cardiac dysfunction needs to be determined; and third, the actual aetiology of the cardiac dysfunction should be identified. Following confirmation of the diagnosis of heart failure, some basic diagnostic tests must also be performed to determine the baseline status of key variables prior to initiation of therapy and to establish the presence of co-morbidities.
