What is Casein-based Nanomaterials in Drug Delivery and Biomedical Applications about?

Caseins are phosphoproteins obtained from milk. Due to their unique properties such as nontoxicity, heat stability, excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, pH responsivity, and good dispersibility, caseins have long been considered as potential biomaterials for the fabrication of nanoscaffolds as cargoes of drug molecules and nutraceuticals. Recently, casein-based nanomaterials have also extensively exploited in biosensing, bioimaging, and tissue engineering. This chapter summarizes the structure and composition of casein and elaborately describes the applications of casein-based nanomaterials as carriers of therapeutic modalities and nutraceuticals. Their applications in biosensing, bioimaging, and tissue engineering are also reviewed.
