What is Carbon Dots for Drug and Gene Delivery about?
Carbon dots (CDs) are novel carbon-based nanomaterials with excellent properties such as biocompatibility, eco-friendliness, economy, facile preparation methods, fluorescence, and high quantum yields. These excellent characteristics make CDs promising materials for in vitro and in vivo bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, and gene-delivery applications. Their photoluminescence (PL) enables CDs to act as trackable drug and gene nanocarriers. In this chapter, we present the physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of CDs, the various applications of CDs in drug delivery, and nucleic acid delivery systems with fluorescent imaging. We also highlight potential clinical applications of these materials and their future prospects.
