What is French Connections about?
is often described as a global writer, and much of his success can be explained by the appeal of his cosmopolitan narratives. Bolaño was an uprooted writer (born in Chile, he spent his formative years in Mexico and most of his adult life in Spain); his stories and his characters are wanderers too, whether the four European academics whose paths intersect in Northern Mexico in their quest of the missing writer Archimboldi, or the American woman, Anne Moore, who drifts from city to city, or the Chilean photographer Mauricio "The Eye" Silva, whose wanderings take him to Mexico, India and Germany. Alexander Beecroft mentioned as one example of the new global novel, alongside Amitav Ghosh's Ibis trilogy or González Iñárritu's film Babel. These narratives all share a pattern of intersecting plots ("Plot of globalization") which exhibit an acute awareness of the interconnectedness of the world.
