His ambiguous relationship with his native country, which he visited on three occasions after his family emigrated from Chile to Mexico in , remains intriguing. While the circumstances of Bolaño's life and early death have contributed to describing him as a "myth" and "legend," it is his first trip to Chile at age twenty, which coincides with the coup d'état on September , , that has primarily helped create his iconoclastic image. I aim here to offer a portrait of Bolaño in the context of the era and places in which he grew up. I have gathered information from diverse sources, including interviews with the author, testimonies from people who knew him, correspondence, and what he wrote in essays and texts recovered from his archive, alongside academic studies and journalistic reviews.
