What is Key Technologies for Ultra-low Emissions from Coal-fired Power Plants about?

Coal remains an abundant energy source in the world. Worldwide coal consumption will remain approximately the same over the next 20 years (2020-2040), with decreasing consumption in China and the U.S. offsetting increases in India [1]. Raw coal contains elements such as carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and other elements. Due to the coal combustion process, coalfired power plants are one of the main sources of sulfur dioxides (SO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and dust (also known as particulate matter, PM) emissions, which have serious impacts on the environment and human health. In order to limit the emissions of SO 2 , NO x , and PM, emission control technologies have been developed and deployed in the coal-fired power generation industry. A typical coal-fired power plant with conventional emissions control technologies is illustrated in Fig. 3.1. These techniques include low-NO x burners (LNBs) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for NO x control, electrostatic precipitator (ESP), or fabric filter (FF) for PM control, and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) for SO 2 control. After 2010s, new regulations in China, the US, and the EU urgently required coal-fired power plants to achieve ne
