What is The Future of EU Law and Governance about?
The European Union is a project that was founded with a rough trajectory in mindan 'ever closer Union among the peoples of Europe'. This suggested a unidirectional process of integration where more and more fields would pass from national to European control and where bonds of trust and solidarity between Europeans would grow over time. The EU's history, however, has defied this simple narrative. Equally, the feeling of 'Europeanness' varies in space and time, with trust in integration varying between states and suffering from perceptions that European solidarityparticularly during the Euro and refugee crisesremains much less strong than the bonds of belonging that exist in the nation state. 1 There is even growing rejection of fundamental principles of integration, such as the rule of law, by some national governments, just as there is support for much deeper integration in others. There is thus no obvious trajectory for the EU in the short to medium-term (in fact, there never was).
