What is Patterns of Governance and Growth about?

Chapter 7 examines the representativeness of the overall argument. It uses governance indicators to present a set of descriptive statistics that provide a bird's-eye view of patterns of governance, corruption and growth for forty-one countries, including thirty-eight with decadal growth between 2000 and 2010 in excess of 50 percent. It also explores the relationship of the book's argument to the large literature that has explored governance-growth relationships econometrically, and the relevance of two-way causality. Eighteen of the forty-one countries grew along the dominant trajectory. Of the eighteen, eight were rapidly growing, non-oil-exporting, non-former Soviet Union countries, whose patterns of institutional change mirrored fairly closely the predicted pattern, six were rapidly growing former Soviet Union countries, and four were oil exporters. Twenty-three of the countries grew along the competitive or intermediate trajectories. Of the twenty-three, nine were early-stage countries whose patterns of institutional change were consistent with expectations, six were European Union accession countries, and eight had more mixed patterns of institutional change.
