What is Belief in Relics about?

A relic is a part of the body of a saint or martyr or holy person, or a piece of their clothing, or a piece of the cross. Relics are venerated in traditions other than Christianity, but in the Christian tradition in the Middle Ages belief in relics was widespread. The belief in relics, it is argued in this chapter, was more than a belief that a fragment of bone was a true relic. It was also an affective religious belief that fit into the medieval belief structure.
