What is Relics and Images about?
After a short introduction, this chapter considers relics and images in the light of two sets of polarities: (1) wholeness and fragmentation (or oneness and multiplicity), where the Buddhist view of relics and images is seen to oscillate between affirming that the body of the Buddha is singular or that it is multiple; and (2) aversions and advocacies, where the questions of impurity and purity, as well as iconophobia and “iconophilia” in Buddhism are dealt with. In both cases, the emphasis is on ambiguities and paradoxes (as well as attitudinal shifts) in the Buddhist tradition vis-à-vis its relics and images. A brief conclusion sums up the chapter’s findings.
