What is The Nutraceutical Potential of Cyanobacteria about?
Taxonomically, cyanobacteria are a phylum of Gram-negative bacteria (Kingdom Monera, Domain Bacteria) occupying a special and unique place in the Living World. 1À3 This is the driving argument in any considerations regarding these unicellular phototrophic prokaryotes. However, they are not enough known and there is a consistent suspect of relevant misunderstandings. 4 In fact, contrary to the common idea, they cannot be considered algae. Although often associated to microalgae, like Chlorella, cyanobacterias' story and constitution are very different, being part of the Prokaryotic Domain, against the Eukaryota, where algae are included, being part of Protista. Therefore the term "blue-green algae" also largely used is scientifically uncorrected and misleading. The term "alga" will be not used, unless in commercial contest, whereas Cyanophyta and Myxobacteria can be accepted. This confusion starts from the common habitat, constituted by any place containing clean water, which allows the development of different microscopic organisms, and some common microscopic and macroscopic features, including the green color. In other words, cyanobacteria can be hardly found in very dry environm
