What is Microalgal Bioremediation of Emerging Contaminants in Domestic Wastewater about?

Domestic sewage contains many compounds, including inorganic heavy metals, organic micropollutants, and pathogens (Mogili and Mohapatra 2021;Mohapatra et al. 2020;Pantha et al. 2021). Several emerging contaminants (ECs) associated with human lifestyle change have also been found in sewage (Dubey et al. 2021). Many treatments can be undertaken, including the conventional ones, but the treatment options depend on the targeted contaminants (Mohapatra et al. 2021). However, hazardous and infectious effluents are disposed of into freshwater resources such as rivers and lakes generally in developing countries due to incomplete removal. Thus, in addition to ECs, it is imperative to treat sewage appropriately before disposal. ECs can be broadly categorized in the following classes: pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PCPs), nanomaterials, and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). Irrespective of their classification, ECs majorly come from municipal (domestic), industrial, agricultural, and hospital premises (Shah et al. 2020).
