What is The Balkans: glacial landforms during deglaciation about?
The nature of glacier behaviour in the deglaciation interval immediately following the Last Glacial Maximum is surprisingly poorly constrained in the Balkans. Glacier retreat at c.17.5ka is evident in both dated glaciofluvial and rockshelter sediments in Greece and in dated moraine successions in Montenegro. The initial phase of retreat was very likely a response to aridity in Heinrich Stadial 1/Oldest Dryas. However, in some areas there is evidence that glaciers then advanced or stabilised in the later part of the deglaciation interval. Glaciokarst landscapes are widespread and well preserved in the Balkans. Problems of accuracy and precision in terrestrial cosmogenic exposure dating, especially in relation to dating limestone surfaces, mean that multiple lines of evidence from glacial and glaciofluvial records are needed in order to constrain glacial events over this interval.
