What is European Russia: glacial landforms from the Bølling–Allerød Interstadial about?
During the Bølling–Allerød Interstadial (14.7–12.7calka BP), the Fennoscandian ice sheet (FIS) retreated from European Russia and the tundra and steppe associations and birch–pine forests colonised the ground previously occupied by the ice. The oscillatory retreat of the FIS was marked by a short-term stabilisation of the ice margin during the Older Dryas cooling and large bodies of stagnant ice were detached from the retreated ice margin during warmings. One or more ice-dammed lakes formed in the White Sea, but the Atlantic waters penetrated the deglaciated Gorlo Strait depression in the Allerød. In the area of European Russia previously occupied by the FIS, end moraine ridges, interlobate (insular) uplands, ring and ridge hummocky moraine, kames, eskers and glaciofluvial deltas were formed. Drumlins and drumlinoids also appeared in the landscape and lateral meltwater channels formed on the slopes of ice-divided mountains and uplands.
