One of the puzzles of contemporary economics is why relative price movements are so frequently ignored in both theoretical and empirical writings. The dramatic increases in the price of oil in the 1970s have led to an increased interest in relative prices in all countries, irrespective of their socioeconomic systems. That interest persuaded the International Economic Association (lEA) to organise the conference recorded in this volume, in 1981. Going beyond earlier lEA conferences on price formation and on inflation, it concentrated on relative price changes. Professor Bela Csikos-Nagy acted as Chairman of the Programme Committee. He provides a valuable summary of the work of the conference, which put particular emphasis on the roles of relative prices in socialist and capitalist economies. Nobel prize winner L. V. Kantorovich, with V. L. Makarov, provides an authoritative review of the position reached in the development of mathematical models of socialist economies.
