What is Sewage Sludge Valorization in the Context of Resource Recovery about?
Along with the economic development of European Union (EU) countries, the number of sewage treatment plants is increasing, which leads to the production of more sewage sludge. In 2018, approximately 3,240,000Mg of sewage sludge was generated in the EU-27. This quantity requires proper management. Sewage sludge can be a valuable source of essential nutrients for plants. It is rich in elements such as nitrogen and phosphorus, (which may be recovered), but can also contain toxic heavy metals. Therefore, chemical analysis of sewage sludge is especially important. Due to the possibility of undesirable ingredients, it is recommended to process them first. Sewage sludge can be treated by many biological, thermal, or chemical methods. The technology used should be also developed individually for each sewage treatment plant with regard to its specific conditions and technological characteristics. All those aspects lead to the potential generation of various types of end-products (treated sewage sludge). Therefore, it is important to consider specific properties or features of the evaluated material when choosing the most beneficial treatment technique. The aim of this chapter is to present
