Important factors such as the scarcity and growing demand for water, the increasing population, the need for sanitation, and increasingly demanding environmental regulations have increased efforts and interest in the sanitation of wastewater as a main action to reduce environmental pollution and risks to human health. However, increasing the capacity in wastewater treatment leads to a greater generation of sludge whose management is very complex and expensive (more than 50% of the total operating costs of a WWTP). This represents a severe global challenge, mainly in developing countries where more efforts are needed to manage water and SS .
