What is RNA oncoviruses and their association with cancer implications about?
Before the mid-19th century, many in the science community were unconvinced of the role of RNA oncovirus in cancer, but research on the subject nevertheless continued. Before the 21st century, the first mammalian RNA tumor virus, the Rous sarcoma virus, was ascertained. The notion that RNA viruses might develop a tumor in humans was solidified by the discoveries of hepatitis C virus (causative agent in hepatocellular carcinoma); the human T-lymphotropic virus, which causes adult T cell leukemia; and mouse mammary tumor virus, which can be transmitted in mice via breast milk from mothers to pups. These viruses are from the Retroviridae family (an exception being hepatitis C virus, which is from the Flaviviriadae family) and insert their genetic material into the infected cell’s genome, using the enzyme reverse transcriptase. The viral RNA is converted into DNA, which can then be added into the host’s genomic DNA. Given this mode of infection, RNA oncoviruses are classified as retroviruses. RNA oncoviruses were the first class of retrovirus to be discovered. The main method by which these viruses promote uncontrolled cell growth is through the long terminal repeats (LTRs) that are en
