What is RNA and aging about?
Defeating death is a desire as old as humanity itself. However, the more conceivable and urgent goal is slowing the downfall of our bodies that happens decades before death. Aging e the progressive loss of function seen in most organisms is believed to be the result of damage accumulated over time. As shown in Fig. 15.1, age is one of the strongest risk factors for multiple complex diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and dementias. Mortality rate thus continuously rises with age [1,2]. Indeed, most people over 65 years are multimorbid e have 2 or more disorders [3]. The Reliability theory of aging presents one possible explanation of these observations [4]. An organism can be thought of as a complex machine comprising of different vital parts each harnessing a given redundancy. With increasing age the redundancy of the vital parts is gradually depleted thus increasing the failing risk of multiple organs and the whole organism. Once the redundancy is exhausted, the mortality risk will no longer increase [5]. In agreement, a recent study of centenarians suggests mortality rate plateaus at advanced ages [6]. Thus, an effective way to reduce the risk of ag
