What is V about?
Vanga There are sixteen species represented by the name vanga in the Vangidae, the vangas, helmetshrikes, and allies. In the literature of the 1800s through to the early 1900s, it's stated a number of times that it comes from the Malagasy name vanga for the Hook-billed Vanga Vanga curvirostris. Latham mentions the name in A General Synopsis of Birds in 1781 in his discussion of "Hook-billed Shrike Lanius curvirostris": 218 This is a native of Madagascar, where it goes by the name of Vanga; it feeds on fruits, and is said to whistle well.
