What is Mesoporous Composite Nanomaterials for Dye Removal and Other Applications about?

Porous materials may be generally defined as continuous solid networks with voids that can be occupied with a fluid [1]. Most materials are to some extent porous. It is quite difficult to find or prepare a truly nonporous solid, yet solid materials have an overwhelming tendency to minimize void space. While pores or cavities may be contained within a solid structure, for a solid to be considered porous, its pores, cavities, or interstices must be deeper than they are wide [1]. As shown in Fig. 1, the classification of these materials depends either on the composition of the building framework or in the size of the pores inside said framework. The composition of the building framework may be purely inorganic (e.g., silica), organic/inorganic (e.g., metal-organic-frameworks), or purely organic (e.g., porous polymers). On the other hand, porosity is a measure of the void fraction in the material. According to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the classification regarding pore size states that a matrix containing pores with diameters smaller than 2 nm is defined as microporous, while mesoporous materials FIG. 1 Schematic classification of porous materials.
