The term "family of nations" is a figurative description of the community of states in the world. While it is now almost identical in scope with the whole of international society, it originally applied only to a group of Western European Christian states which were signatories to the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. Characteristic of this family of nations has been its continual expansion from Western Europe; notable early examples of this process were the inclusion of the Muscovite Empire of Russia in 1721 and of the United States in 1783. The nineteenth century saw its intrusion into non-Christian areas of the world with the admission of Turkey into this fellowship by express sanction of the Treaty of Paris in 1856. When the Western family of nations reached into the Far Eastern world, it found itself confronting another family of nations under the leadership of China. Clashes arose between these two mutually exclusive systems and in the end the advancing Western one eclipsed the other.
