the Chinese Educational Association, the Patriotic School, and the newspaper Su-pao (The Kiangsu Journal) were the major institutions where the transition was made from reformism to radicalism to revolution. The new revolutionary movement was dramatized by the violently anti-Manchu articles in Su-pao during June 1903 and the consequent arrest and trial of six men associated with the paper. The Su-pao trial was followed by a new phase. Revolutionaries gradually moved away from open verbal protests in the partially protected schools, press, and associations of the treaty ports and Tokyo. Instead they turned to direct violence and attempted to organize revolts in the interior of China. This new direction led to the founding of clandestine subversive organizations. In Shanghai the hypersecret Restoration Society (Kuang-fu hui) was established toward the end of 1904.
