1. Nine chalcone-diethyl malonate derivatives (4a-i) were prepared by reacting chalcone derivatives (3a-i) with diethyl malonate in the presence of a catalytic amount of KOt-Bu. 2. The products were obtained in good to excellent yields ranging from 72-94% and characterized using techniques such as FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and elemental analysis. 3. The addition of diethyl malonate to the chalcones introduced two chiral centers and the ethoxy groups showed diastereotopic properties in the 1H-NMR spectra.
