The Cebu CFI Community Cooperative (CFI) was founded in 1970 to help employees of the Courts of First Instance in Cebu escape abusive lending practices. It was started with 29 members and 200 pesos in capital. Originally for CFI employees, it later expanded its membership. Today CFI has over 130,000 members and is a multi-billion cooperative that provides affordable loans and health insurance.
