1) An algebraic curve is defined by a polynomial equation in x and y, such as f(x,y)=0. The degree of the curve is the degree of the polynomial. 2) Quadratic curves (degree 2) can be classified into conic sections - ellipses, hyperbolas, parabolas. Higher degree curves have no simple classification. 3) A singular point on a curve is where the gradient is zero (∂f/∂x = ∂f/∂y = 0) and lies on the curve (f=0). Most curves can be locally parametrized near non-singular points.
