The ammonia condenser in a wax plant unit was failing frequently, decreasing product output. The condenser uses ammonia and seawater in a tube-and-shell heat exchanger, but the bimetallic tubes were prone to leaks. To solve this, the condenser design was changed to use single-wall stainless steel tubes instead of bimetallic tubes. Calculations showed the stainless steel design required fewer tubes and had a higher fouling factor, making it more economical over the long run despite higher initial costs. The
