Silk is a thin fibre produced by silkworms that can be woven into soft, smooth cloth. It originated in ancient China and was important culturally and economically for thousands of years. Legend says the method for making silk cloth was invented by the wife of the Yellow Emperor, who discovered how to spin silk fibres into thread and weave them into cloth. Silk clothing was very valuable in ancient China as a sign of wealth, and silk even served as money during some dynasties.
