What is Elwood Pleas and the New Castle Courier about?

Elwood Pleas took possession of the New Castle Courier newspaper in 1862 and used his position as editor to support the Union and oppose slavery during the Civil War. The Civil War years were difficult for the newspaper due to high prices and shortages of printing supplies. In 1864, Pleas enlisted in the Union army for five months, leaving his foreman in charge of the newspaper. After the war, Pleas continued as editor for four more years before selling the newspaper.
