Can I read Binding of Ca2+ to phosphoinositols, phosphatidylserines and gangliosides on EtoBox?

Binding of Ca2+ to phosphoinositols, phosphatidylserines and gangliosides by Kohei Hayashi; Martin Mühleisen; Wolfgang Probst; Hinrich Rahmann is a Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology article available to read on EtoBox.

What is Binding of Ca2+ to phosphoinositols, phosphatidylserines and gangliosides about?

The etIect of K', Mg-" and serotonin on the interaction between Ca:" and dilIerent phospholipids as well as glycosphingolipids (gangliosides) was studied by equilibrium dialysis using aSCa as tracer. The highly I'a~lar phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (TPI) was found to bind more Ca"" per lipid molecule than all other lipids tested and Ca"" could not bc released as easily as in the other lipids by K', Mg"' and serotonin. Ca"" is released from all lipid-('a-'" complexes me.st elfectively by Mg"\*, serotonin is less ettectivc but enhances K" in its capaciu, to displace Ca:" from the respective binding sites. A remarkable dissociating influence of serotonin on ganglioside-Ca-" and phosphatidylserine-Ca 2" complexes is observed. This effect is less pronounced with phosphatidylinositoI-Ca"" complexes under comparable conditions. The possible functional role of phospholipids and gangliosides in vivo is discussed with regard to the specilic Ca2"-binding properties of these lipids.
