José Rizal was a Filipino nationalist and polymath during Spanish colonial rule in the late 19th century. He was a brilliant student who studied medicine and travelled to Europe, where he joined the Propaganda Movement advocating reforms in the Philippines. Rizal published two novels condemning the abuses of Spanish colonial rule, and was eventually exiled to Dapitan by the Spanish authorities.
