In 2009, about 1,030 thousand tonnes of waste paper were recovered in Hong Kong, a decrease of 6% from 2008. The recovered waste paper was exported, primarily to mainland China by sea, for recycling. There are around 240 waste paper collectors in Hong Kong who collect, sort, compress, and bale waste paper for export and recycling. The main types of waste paper recovered for recycling included office paper, newspaper, cardboard, and other mixed paper.
