Pigafetta kept a detailed journal of the Magellan Expedition from 1519-1522. When he returned to Italy, his associates encouraged him to write a formal account and have it published. He approached Pope Clement VIII, Philippe de Villiers, and Louis de Savoy for financial support. Unfortunately, they withdrew their support, as other accounts of the expedition had already been published, so people would have less interest in Pigafetta
