This study focuses on the development of chitosan membranes derived from shrimp carapaces for use as low-cost electrolytes in PEM fuel cells. The research highlights the significant improvement in proton conductivity of laboratory-produced chitosan membranes compared to commercial ones, attributed to higher degrees of deacetylation and lower molar mass. The findings suggest that chitosan could serve as a viable alternative to traditional petroleum-based electrolytes like Nafion®.
