What is Smoking in the United Kingdom about?
This chapter describes the history of smoking in the United Kingdom starting from the 15th century when British colonists sent tobacco from the Americas to the United Kingdom. In light of the national context, the chapter then examines the life-course smoking trajectories of seven cohorts of UK men and women who were between 20-29 and 80-89 years old in 2002. The data show that the rate of smoking among UK men in successive birth cohorts decreased signi cantly, whereas smoking rates of UK women increased among older cohorts, declined somewhat in middle cohorts, and then leveled o at over 40 percent, reaching a perverse equality with men. These trends have been subject to in uences that worked in opposite directions. Whereas anti-smoking information and recent tobacco control policies pushed smoking participation to decrease, low cigarette taxes from the 1950s to the 1990s, and changing social norms about women and smoking, pushed smoking participation rates to increase.
