Oliver (Olle Matthiasson) Caulk was born in Sweden in 1638. He was drafted into the Swedish army and given the name Olof Isgrå, meaning "ice-gray" due to his prematurely gray hair. He saw military action in 1654 when the Dutch surrendered Fort Casimir to the Swedes. He later accused his captain of theft and threatened to kill him.
