Although bacteria and fungi also may cause in£ammation of infant heart muscle, they do so only rarely [1]. In babies in the ¢rst year of life, the Coxsackievirus, especially group B3, and Toxoplasma gondii are often the agents involved. Coxsackie B myocarditis is most prevalent in the summer and early autumn and most often a¡ects the infant in the ¢rst month of life. The onset of the disease is sudden, and the infant may have an elevated or subnormal temperature. Some infants recover completely, but for others the course may be rapidly fatal. It is this group that presents as apparent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) [2,3]. At autopsy, the heart may be enlarged and=or heavy, and there may be petechiae in the epicardium and myocardium. However, upon gross inspection the heart often appears entirely normal.
