Air Deccan was the largest private low-cost carrier in India, launching in 2003 with two destinations and growing to 65 destinations by 2007. However, the airline faced declining customer satisfaction due to unreliable service and competition from new carriers. In June 2007, Vijay Mallya acquired a 26% controlling stake in Air Deccan for Rs. 5.5 billion. Aviation analysts estimated total losses of over 20 billion rupees for the Indian aviation industry in 2006-2007.
