Pointing involves filling mortar in the joints between bricks or stones in masonry construction. The joints are raked out to a depth of 10-20mm and filled with mortar, which is pressed firmly to bond with the existing mortar. Pointing strengthens the masonry by sealing the joints, which are otherwise weak points where water can enter. There are various styles of pointing including flush, recessed, and struck pointing that differ in the shape and depth of the finished mortar joint.
