At the turn of the 20th century, a young girl named, Marigolde, receives a doll for her birthday. It isn't the one she wanted. She hates it for several reasons. First, she thinks it is ugly and second, she believes it is alive. The girl throws the doll away. By a set of fortunate circumstances, the doll makes its way to San Francisco. There it becomes a real living little girl and quickly thereafter, a beautiful young woman befriended by two aspiring actresses, Rose and Ginger, who help her get hired to work in the theater. Both initially are her friends. One of them is loyal and true forever. The other eventually becomes her arch enemy. They introduce Dianna to Ebb Ziegfeld, the second greatest producer in show business, who falls in love with her. Our talented heroine, now known as Dianna Doll, becomes a theatrical star. She appears normal to everyone, but has to keep her origin and the reason she is now living as a human, a secret. Dianna meets and marries the man she knows she was destined to marry, Lad Van, who also works in the theater, but it is not to last.
