The 654th Heavy Tank Hunter Battalion received its first Jagdpanther tank destroyers in March 1944. In July 1944, during Operation Bluecoat near Caen, eight Jagdpanthers of the 654th engaged British Churchill tanks and destroyed 11 of them within the first two minutes. However, the Jagdpanthers suffered mechanical issues with their final drives that limited their range to about 35 km.
