About this document

Melamine is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Melamine has historically been used to adulterate foods by increasing their apparent protein content. Its discovery in pet foods and infant formula in 2007 showed that global food supply chains can allow contamination to spread widely. Studies since then have found that melamine forms crystals in combination with cyanuric acid that can damage kidneys. More research is still needed to understand toxic effects at different doses and develop rapid detection methods for multiple contaminants. Ongoing monitoring
