Deep foundations such as piles are used to transfer structural loads to stronger ground at depth. There are two main types of piles: bored piles which are cast in place and driven piles which are prefabricated and driven into the ground. Pile resistance comes from shaft resistance along the sides from shear stresses and bearing resistance from pressure at the base. A worked example calculates the resistances of a pile socketed into stiff clay overlying dense sand, accounting for the effects of negative skin
