1) Arakan, now known as Rakhine State, was an independent kingdom located along the coast of the Bay of Bengal in present-day Myanmar from the 4th century AD until its gradual conquest and incorporation into Burma. 2) The Arakanese people were originally of Indian descent but became culturally Burmese over time while retaining some Indian influences from their location near Bengal.
