What is Support materials about?
## Support materials Supported nanoparticles are extensively used as catalysts in many diverse applications for chemical transformations. Catalytic sites (i.e., active site) are generally composed of metal and/or metal oxide particles with sizes in the nanometer range. The surface atoms are more active compared to bulk atoms due to the presence of fewer neighboring atoms and unsaturated sites or more dangling bonds. Moreover, the surface imperfections of the particle change the electronic structure of the metal atoms that can act as electron or hole trap centers. Hence, metal species are generally dispersed on high surface area materials, termed as supports, to utilize metal species effectively in the form of nanoparticles. Since metal atoms tend to aggregate to minimize their surface energy, support material is used to stabilize the nanoparticles preventing them from agglomerating through metal-support interactions. Pore structure is also important for support materials when we consider heterogeneous catalysis since pore structure is important in terms of the mass transport of reactants to active sites and products from the active site. The support material itself should be stable
