What is Costumbrismo and Modernism in Colombia about?

The costumbrista literature in Latin America emerged as a reaction to Romanticism to realistically describe popular customs through stories and novels. The main exponents in Colombia were José Manuel Marroquín and Tomás Carrasquilla, who reflected rural and peasant life in works such as El Moro, Frutos de mi tierra, and La Marquesa de Yolombó. Costumbrismo was characterized by meticulously describing the traditions, beliefs, and language of society from a specific era.
